In this Webworm episode, I talk to science fiction writer Sonny Whitelaw — who after writing some Stargate books, discovered some fans thought Stargate was very, very real.
Great to have this content fresh on a Monday morning! Really interesting conversation loved how Sonny talked about the battling ontologies of Mythology, Science, and fiction. Looking forward to hearing more. Also, agreed on the reaction to Gerry Brownlee's comments, they made me want to throw my laptop through a window. I hope we can stop that sort of politics from further seeping into our society.
Sonny was great, please more brighter than me (not hard) people on the podcast please.
I love mythology, science fiction, odd religions and our relationship with symbols. I love when great writers create great fiction which pins these into reality. Also just internet silliness, like the heartbeat in the gas cloud recently, the response has been amusing. The Old Ones returning etc.
When I was listening I felt a pang of sadness for those caught up in conspiracy theories. I wonder how terrifying it really is to believe in reptilian overlords in the flesh. That is sobering. So much worse that politicians are utilising what seems to me to be a vulnerable state of mind to garner electoral victory.
Thanks again for keeping my brain alive in quarantine.
great surprise to have these episodes added to the readable content - makes it easier to consume while at work or doing chores (or playing animal crossing). thanks!
Fascinating episode. Made me realize that the although they seem to be farther apart than ever, the intersection of science and mythology has also never been so apparent. And holy shit, your election! That seems like a BFD, to put it mildly (and in Biden terms).
Interesting! It would be hard to react to someone who believes your writing comes from channeling aliens... reminded me of Muses in ancient Greece. If it were me, maybe I'd try to be funny & act like I'm insulted -- why can't I get the credit for my work?? :P
I just started reading An Illustrated A Brief History of Time, so this conversation kinda interconnected with that. The gaps between science & religion, & the questions that maybe we will always have to wonder about. I like having stuff to read that makes me have to pause sometimes... re-read & think about what the complex thought means. Thanks for adding to that as well

Thanks Elliot. Sonny ruled. Might go get some of her books!
this is SO good.
Very pleased you stumbled on this!
Love this. Thanks for being an intelligent and sane voice during these trying times!
Thank YOU for the support.
