Episode 4: I love "The Boys" because it features a psychopath with strong hints of Trump

Listen now | In today’s Webworm I talk to Ant Starr, fellow New Zealander and star of The Boys — one of my favourite graphic novels, and more recently — favourite TV shows.
Haven't finished all of the podcast yet but i keep listening to Ant's accent fluctuating between Kiwi & American :-) watched a little montage of his character on youtube too, wow... how have i missed this! i'll be downloading, i mean signing up to Amazon Prime tonight :-) !
Hey David - I'm about a year late on this one but I'm thrilled you're brought the podcast back. I was introduced to you via Armchaired & Dangerous, hands down my favorite segment of Dax & Monica's show (tell them if you like, or not!). Anyway, listened back through your episodes and also enjoyed both seasons of The Boys last Fall and loved it! It was really great to hear Ant's NZ accent, as I hadn't heard him in an interview before today. Great insights on both your sides from the show. I hope you're continuing to thrive state-side for a while longer!
I’m bingeing The Umbrella Academy, it’s brilliant, season two especially (more humour, incredible set and costume design, better flow) which is so timely on topics of discrimination and how little has changed etc. such a good watch.
Doom Patrol is tonally really similar to The Boys, which I think makes sense, as they were both made by former showrunners of Supernatural. Eric Kripke who does The Boys created and showran Supernatural from Seasons 1-5, and Jeremy Carver who does Doom Patrol co-showran Supernatural from Seasons 8-11. You can feel how both of them are stretching their wings when freed from network TV. Also it’s based on a hilarious comic book and Alan Tudyk is in it!
I know it's an 'old' show, it came out in 2014, but I really enjoyed watching the first two seasons of Detectorists on Netflix recently. It's exactly the sort of gentle English comedy that's needed during a pandemic, with its endearing cast of oddball characters and deft writing. MacKenzie Crook (Gareth from The Office) has done a brilliant job in creating, directing and starring in the show, so it's well worth a watch.
I'm also finally getting around to watching Cobra Kai now that it's available on Netflix. I can't tell you how many times I watched the original Karate Kid on VHS when I was younger, and I'm loving how this show manages to work with that nostalgia factor while also telling a compelling story where Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence have to deal with their past rivalry. It's kind of cheesy at times and the show doesn't take itself too seriously, but that all just adds to the fun.
I loved Outrageous Fortune until the last series. Cheryls partner would never have bonked her daughter. The writers went against the characters moral compass for the sake of a story line. It was a betrayal and it was disappointing shit.
I'm gonna have to check this show/graphic novel out! I've been going crazy what with being jobless/bored out of my mind with this stupid pandemic going on, but Webworm adds some interesting things to my week. :]
The boys is such an awesome show. And such so about what’s going on now. Me too movement, politics, just life and people. Love it. Great writing. The podcast with Anthony Star was great-Thankyou
‘The Boys’ is (are?) awesome, although someone really should have a word with Karl Urban about his accent. It’s not the worst cockney I’ve ever heard - that would still go to Julia Landau in Buffy, but it’s pretty bad.
If you’re looking for something to watch, I’ve just finished binging both seasons of ‘Cobra Kai’ in 2 nights! It really shouldn’t be that addictive, but it is.

I’m watching High Score on Netflix, a documentary on video game history. Takes me back ... 30 years
