hannibal was my favorite thing while it was airing. Meeting Mads at in a dusty old hotel ballroom in Indiana is one of my all time favorite con experiences. He was endlessly sweet, hilarious, and seemed to truly enjoy his time there.
i am so glad other people are able to find this beautiful show, and fall in love. I think if a streaming service ever picked it up i might die from happiness.
Oh gosh, Mads is just too dreamy. I love everything he does: The Hunt, Valhalla Rising, After the Wedding, all amazing.
One of my favorite behind-the-scenes special effects facts from Hannibal was from season one episode 5, the one with the "angel wing" bodies kneeling by a bed. The network had issues with the buttcrack being visible, so they filled in the crack with fake blood. Problem solved!
The food designer from the show put out a Hannibal themed cookbook, it's just as gorgeous as the show. Worth checking out.
I'm not into gore that much but my God did the show make me want to see more blood flow! So sneaky the way they made gore sensual to make you get in to the head of hannibal.
Every episode had me gasping about colour palettes.
It was so deluxe and detailed im surprised it didn't have a mega mega mega mega $ budget just for set.
What a show! I binged it years ago and it was all I could think about. It was filmed in Toronto, where I live, so along with occasional cast sightings, I recognize a lot of the exterior shots. His home exterior was right by my work, it was hard not to shudder just a bit when I passed by on my way to grab lunch, knowing the feasts he’d prepared inside.
That’s so cool! I LOVE seeing filming locations in person, even years after the fact when production has finished. I also love noticing filming locations after the fact.
I was watching American Psycho one day and noticed the lobby of the building where Patrick Bateman’s office is located is the same high rise where my cousin’s wedding reception was years after the fact (and in Toronto too I should add).
And the market square of the city I grew up near and where I attended uni was used for a scene in Guillermoro Del Toro’s Crimson Peak which is fabulous.
Also, my childhood home was *almost* the film set for Fly Away Home (starring Jeff Daniels and Anna Paquin). It’s kind of sad to think about this though considering the house is quite derelict now ever since my parents separated - a ghost shall we say...
I could go on about filming locations instead of leaving this on a sad note but I’m afraid I’ve rambled enough already.
I’m just gonna make myself available to anyone who isn’t Danish, who wants more Mads Mikkelsen stuff recommended, wants to know about any Danish words or wants me to translate whatever! 🇩🇰
I watched Hannibal for the first time when it first came out. I was 17. I had seen Silence of the Lambs, of course, but I couldn’t imagine anything this cool. It absolutely blew my mind and shattered my heart. This was also at the height of Tumblr popularity, so my dash was filled with photo edits of Will Graham wearing flower crowns such as this: https://heroes-get-made.tumblr.com/post/54038471727
It’s so silly (and so dated!), but such a good memory. Naturally, Hugh Dancy then wore a flower crown at Comic Con in 2015. Must watch: https://youtu.be/yPtN9MMBmBc I’m a person who tends to fall into obsession when I find something I really, really, love – Lord of the Rings, anything Jim Henson, classic Saturday Night Live. I become a walking encyclopedia of that thing, and immediately become absolutely intolerable because I just need to talk to someone about just how much I love this thing!
For some reason, Hannibal had kinda fallen off the map for me after season one. I didn’t go back to re-watch until August 2020, and it was honestly the first time in my adult life I have been entranced in the same way that used to happen when I was a kid/teen. I was absolutely existing in the world of Hannibal (I don’t know that it’s the healthiest place to exist, but hey). As a Chuck Tingle fan, I also absolutely cannot believe that I didn’t know about “I WANT TO KISS YOU ALSO PROBABLY EAT YOU: THAT HANDSOME MADS STORY,” but now I want to hear his version of events exclusively.
I was having a terrible day yesterday, my mental health was worse than it has been in a long time, but to come home to a Webworm post featuring Hannibal, Chuck Tingle, Bryan Fuller, and talks of more Hannibal?? I was immediately sucked back into the word of Hannibal, my day significantly brightened. I’m so enthused about the fact that you’ve opened this dialogue, it’s an absolute blast! Finally, someone who gets it!
Mikaela, this was a dream response to read. Sorry you're having a shit time, and glad that this gave you some joy. Fan communities can be so rewarding - especially when the creators (well, only then perhaps) "get it" - it's so cool, for all involved. I didn't follow it - and it's hot trash - but I feel Supernatural was a similar buzz. But yeah - this show is above and beyond. So glad you discovered some new Chuck Tingle, too! Happy days.
Whilst Twin Peaks is my favourite TV show, Hannibal is up there too and is a better show on an episode-by-episode basis. I am forever recommending Hannibal to people - they rarely follow up as they know my perchant for all that is horror and weird, but the few who do adore it.
I first watched Hannibal when it came out - I was in a very deep depression (but didn’t know it) and in a stifling relationship. Hannibal is now a comfort piece in many ways - the colours and the music and the acting and the direction never cease to amaze me and I always see something new on every rewatch.
So glad you finally watched it David, it’s a phenomenal show.
By far one of the best shows ever made. perfect casting and writing. Also using the aesthetic of Chef's Table to present the Hannibal "dishes" is one of the most genius ways to present the cannibalism of this character.
I need to re-watch that show, everything about it is gorgeous. Something I found funny on my first watch though, and it's beena while so sorry if I can't remember the specifics but I was watching it on Neon or wherever it was before it landed on Netflix and seconds after showing a stag monster made of disembodied human limbs (or something equally terrifying), there was a shot showing a painting of a naked lady and THE NIPPLES WERE BLURRED. I don't know who was in charge of this censorship, the network or something, but that's where they drew the line. Blood eagles and mushroom corpses? Yup. Female nipples? Gtfo.
You would be surprised what you can get away with on American network television when it's clear that no one (Nielsen wise) is watching your show. The show didn't make a big impression in The US so there was no need for any faux outrage over the content so the creators were pretty much left alone save for the Salt Lake City, Utah NBC affiliate which pulled it off the air after four episodes. Fuller himself pulled the episode Oeuf off the schedule due to the insane amount of school shootings in The US. I liked the show fine but not at the level that its fandom did, they are....intense.
The show had at least two fairly explicit sex scenes (that I recall, I've never re-watched the series) and I know one of them included two women. I think they realized after it barely got renewed after the first season did so poorly that it was going to axed eventually so they might as well swing for the fences and do what they wanted to do. NBS really pinned a lot of hope to the show initially and it got a good reception at the Upfronts but the reality came quickly crashing down that American viewers were not interested and therefore they could go hog wild on the content. I know it's received a lot more attention on Netflix than it did on NBC, especially because so many people binged it in quarantine.
So glad you finally watched it! In love with Hannibal. Crushed it got cancelled (although I think we’re all shocked it even got 3 seasons to begin with). It’s actually the most beautiful show I’ve ever seen. A few years back (summer after season 3 ended) I went to see Mads and Gillian at FanExpo and I remember them saying it cost about $1 million per episode (I haven’t listened to that podcast yet to do not sure what they said on there) and that’s why they were having issues getting it picked up by another broadcaster. Glad to hear they’re all still on board with making more, though. They definitely have a fan base for it.
Also, got to meet Mads in person (Gillian unfortunately had a scheduling conflict and left before I got to her) and he’s just as wonderful as you’d expect. Very laid back, very cool, very tanned, very attractive haha. Likes to smoke but smells of “sunshine and stale laundry” (direct quote from my friend - I’m not in the habit of sniffing people). Took time to chat and it felt like he genuinely wanted to talk with you. Anyway, I bet if you could get a hold of him he’d be down for an interview.
See if you can find his film “The Hunt” (2012). Very different from his Hannibal role.
YES this makes me so happy, David. I, too, love all things Hannibal. I’d love to send you a photograph of my Gillian Anderson hand tattoo at some point (nicknamed Gillian Handerson). I think as a fellow xfiles-er and now hannibal-er you’d appreciate it.
Season three is a different experience for sure but I still ate it up. Do let us know what you think!
Ps Mads is the most beautiful man of all time and when he opens vodka during a rogue one interview I was besotted.
not going to lie, this had always been in my peripherals but I never got around to it even though my two main interests are cooking and murder mysteries. after your glowing recommendation I was like "oh fuck it I'll give it a shot" and then suddenly it was 40 hours later and my tv had a faint buzz even after I finally let it have a rest
anyway if we don't get a season 4 promise soon I will create my own network and the only thing it will play will be hannibal
Bought the boxed set of Hannibal for my son at Christmas. Love this show! (And "Cube" - saw years ago because if my adoration for Julian Richings). I was Just thinking if this series and it's mesmerizing, brutal imagery after seeing the film "The House That Jack Built" by Lars von Trier. Also recently added to my list of "cinematically arresting yet disturbing as f**k films" are "Hereditary," "Daniel Isn't Real." 🤟🏼🖖🏼✌🏼

So glad to hear he's cool with fans! It says a lot.
yeah, he even wore my flower crown for one of the photo ops i had with him. He was so kind and very genuine.

I think this could be a good present. Noted.

That must make the show extra-surreal to watch!

Very very kind offer!
Do you know where I can watch "Riders of Justice"?
Seconded!
It looks very funny and dark, my favourite kind of film

Side note: Mads Mikkelsen's sense of humor (like everything else about him) is impeccable.

They both fall into a truly surreal dream space at times, eh?
100%!

Yeah Jimmy - the cooking is so anti-horror it's great. Made me hungry.

Americans are really afraid of anything that could possibly be perceived as sexual, eh. Violence - totally fine. Nude human body? GET IT AWAY
"This Film Is Not Yet Rated" is quite a good documentary about the censorship ratings in the U.S.A. if you have not already seen it.

Just to expand on that, I think also, because it was violence rather than sex or swearing, it got a pass.

I don't think I've ever laughed so much at an email, high value stuff! Tears of joy
Very glad you got some lolz. Superb.
Well, it sure sounds like I've been sleeping on this show too... LOTS of fans here, I see. Added to my list on Netflix now, I'll fix this soon!
