I’m sorry it’s starting to get to you, but this is the type of software bug I find hilarious. It reminds me of this story where the creator of a software package purposely broke it because people weren’t paying to use it, which ended up breaking a lot of downstream software https://dev.to/anthonyjdella/how-a-rogue-developer-ruined-millions-of-software-happened-this-weekend-4bp. The “I hate you” bug is harmless, but annoying enough to get the attention of Amazon, and I bet introduced by a software engineer who was passed over for a promotion or something.
"TLDR: A software developer who made some highly used open source software, decided to go rogue and inject a bug into his software, making it usable. This affected every other dependency (and developer) using his software."
I did wonder if it was someone disgruntled - just the fact it was "I hate you". So specific. But then again - so many lines in that show are kinda brutal so imagine co-incidence.
The line of code that was added to the software that broke everything is this:
for (let i = 666; i < Infinity; i++;)
This just tells the program "Starting from 666 keep adding 1 as long as the number is less than infinity", which, ends up just going forever until the program crashes. Very blatant, and very funny to start at 666. Disgruntled engineers come up with some creative ways to do damage.
I've put some stuff like that into software before, but I always do something that's more toward the funny and amusing side to bring a little bit of levity to whoever encounters it.
It could be a case of accidental number input by whoever wrote the subtitle file. Amazon uses a few types of subtitle file (such as TTML, timed text markup language) and you specify when the caption comes on ('begin' eg 9.21s) and goes away ('end' eg 12.5s). Maybe they entered a whopping huge number for 'end' (like 5000h) and you have to wait for that time to elapse… And Amazon never wrote a function to check if this could ever occur, thus never allowing a timed caption to be removed earlier than intended.
Thanks for this. The strange thing is, the experience was so different for the users I talked to. Some had it just a short time within the epi. Some had it carry over into other episodes. For me - it just started no matter what TV or film I watched. Then went away. Then came back. That is what I don't quite understand....
'the first time Amazon has commissioned my work' ....what a great punchline. I wonder if they have a Farrier dossier that has been thumped on someone's desk?
Yup. Same problem after watching The Boys. Thankfully, it only lasted for the episode in question and then was gone. But it was amusing at first, and then annoying as I, too, prefer not to be distracted by subtitles. At least none of us are alone in being bullied by The Boys.
This must be fairly widespread even if people in the relatively small pool of Webworm readers is experiencing it! The thing I find so weird is how *different* everyone's experience was. For some the words didn't leave, others they do - or leave then come back. There is nothing consistent about it. SO WEIRD.
Maybe different television brands/player software are interpreting the subtitle instructions in different ways, and that accounts for the variances in the perceived results.
The rich don’t necessarily despise the poor. I suspect they are just terrified of them, hence the success of zombie movies where small groups try to defend themselves against large hordes who will take everything they have and turn them into zombies/poor people too
Fair. I also think to fit in with their "values", they have to other them in some way (ie zombies). Like - the reason they are poor is that they didn't work hard enough. It's their fault. So - they don't need to worry about giving them money or feeling bad or guilty about anything.
sounds like a thesis. I wrote an essay about 12 years ago arguing that zombie containment plans are just hidden strategies for the rich when the poor inevitably rise up to tear them down.
A lot of people online seemed to be watching on Samsung's - but it wasn't limited to Samsungs. This is the weirdest glitch to get my head around. No big pattern.
I fully believe Elon Musk is behind this in an attempt to troll Bezos. I don’t have any friends who watch The Boys, and everything I’ve read about it makes it seem like a show that’s a little too in love with sexual violence so I probably won’t be watching 🤷🏻♀️
I really enjoyed it at first and could tolerate the violence because the rest was so good but either it got more violent and cruel or my tolerance lowered because I was getting more and more stressed each episode and then I just refused to watch the latest season with my husband. There’s enough violence and awful people in real life, I don’t need to choose it as escapism - but at the same time I can see how good it is on numerous levels and understand why people love it.
I've been wondering at my reluctance to continue watching. But it's that sort of discomfort which has drawn in the people who think Homelander is a hero... I was really really into the first season. Idk... maybe I'll go back.
I do think they are really good at humanising certain characters - Kimiko's storyline has got me this season. I like that she's one of the most powerful characters and doesn't have to say a word. Also dig the parody of culture they are doing - like, I could not watch the big Disney announcement in the same way after the latest season. They are razor sharp at parody and I dig that a lot! Also - very much understand why you would turn off and entirely fair.
I love the boys! Just finished the latest season last week, so gutted the next one isn't due till 2026! Anyhow..
I watch TV with subtitles (much to my family's dismay) and I haven't had a problem. I wander if you can cheat the system.. go back and watch the episode or that portion of the episode with the subtitles on? This might trick it into not displaying 'I hate you' anymore?
Not me just starting to watch The Boys this week. 😂 😬
I'm almost done re-watching the first season. I watched it when it first came out but haven't yet seen any of the other seasons. I'll let you know if my TV starts to hate me. Maybe it'll be fixed by the time I get to that episode!

My husband is a software engineer and I’m dying laughing at your last statement 🤣🤣🤣
Haha I’m also a software engineer, and trying not to get any ideas!
Ah the black and white engineer brain is getting the better of you. 😉You need a friend like me who lives in shades of gray and is a bad influence lol
I've put some stuff like that into software before, but I always do something that's more toward the funny and amusing side to bring a little bit of levity to whoever encounters it.
I like to hide my sarcasm in documentation (since no one reads it anyways)
I've caught a few of those in a variety of places. :)
Repeat after me: We love you, David.
You can’t spell “webworms” without “we”, and we can’t be webworms without you. Don’t let Bezos gaslight you. You are loved.

Thanks for enjoying that. Nice when my pithy little lines are appreciated!
It is Mr Organ.
I'd agree, except he was SO shit with technology. He was a man caught in another time. Just him, in his van, putting in the hours. Old school.
(I know you were joking, but I do like entertaining such ideas).

I watched this episode of The Boys on my Samsung TV and didn't get this bug and now I feel left out.
I am sorry you missed out on this unique viewing experience.
But isn't that a good thing tho? The machines love you!
Or at least they tolerate you? 😅
🤣🤣🤣“At one point they ask for “a short video of the issue”— the first time Amazon has commissioned my documentary work.”
The rich don’t necessarily despise the poor. I suspect they are just terrified of them, hence the success of zombie movies where small groups try to defend themselves against large hordes who will take everything they have and turn them into zombies/poor people too

I wanna watch Dawn of the Dead.
sounds like a thesis. I wrote an essay about 12 years ago arguing that zombie containment plans are just hidden strategies for the rich when the poor inevitably rise up to tear them down.
"the first time Amazon has commissioned my documentary work" LOL.
I have just added film maker to my CV. I have been doing this work for years! Microsoft is one of my biggest commission requesters.
I feel like I am now breathing rare air!! Just waiting for my invite to Cannes.
I think you are coping well. After one day of it I would have needed therapy.
To be fair, I have had a therapy session during the time this has been happening.. forgot to mention this though!
Ground Control to Major Tom…….. perhaps Hal is calling from 2001 Space Oddity.
We’re watching The Boys on our LG tv, no subliminal messages yet……but get why you’re spooked by this.
A lot of people online seemed to be watching on Samsung's - but it wasn't limited to Samsungs. This is the weirdest glitch to get my head around. No big pattern.
Maybe try watching that episode of The Boys again? To see if it resets itself? Like a turn it off/ turn it on again type of thing?
I'm sorry you're experiencing this. It's kinda funny tho 😅😅.
I tried! No dice!
I fully believe Elon Musk is behind this in an attempt to troll Bezos. I don’t have any friends who watch The Boys, and everything I’ve read about it makes it seem like a show that’s a little too in love with sexual violence so I probably won’t be watching 🤷🏻♀️

I gave it up before this latest season too, same feelings.
I've been wondering at my reluctance to continue watching. But it's that sort of discomfort which has drawn in the people who think Homelander is a hero... I was really really into the first season. Idk... maybe I'll go back.

Yeah the parody aspect is why I was gonna watch in the first place. I guess I’ll stick to the approx. 584 other shows I watch…
I love the boys! Just finished the latest season last week, so gutted the next one isn't due till 2026! Anyhow..

Alas, this did not work! (but thank you)
Also - you're family have the correct idea. They should keep bullying you haha!
Not me just starting to watch The Boys this week. 😂 😬
