I have to assume everyone submits stuff in the hope that one night they'll hear pebbles at their window. They'll look out to see JGL standing there looking sheepish. When they open the door he lightly holds their hand and says "it's about you. It was all just to feel like I was a part of your life." And then they kiss and the credits roll.
I am also convinced this is an AI project. What else would get 6 million in funding? AI generated art is becoming more common. It raises a lot of questions for artist compensation. How do you know if your art was used?
Thanks for this. It’s been perplexing me also. I had a go at adding a couple of 4-word replies, trying to take the piss. Instantly realising there’s no conveyance of comic intention and I am merely feeding his machine.
Boring lawyer hat on ... does HITRECORD have a set of terms and conditions on its website? Typically this is where the details of how they use content are hidden, as well as who they share or sell it to. The key issue is whether contributors are given sufficient notice of those terms, it sounds like they aren't ...
It all seems a little hinky to me. If I was a contributor, I wouldn't necessarily expect any financial compensation but I think an explanation of what my contribution was going to be used for would be the least JGL could do. The people he's crowdsourcing from, even just throwaway stuff that doesn't really cost them anything, are going to end up being fatigued and it will diminish their goodwill towards him over time. It feels like a very one-way movement of creative energy.
*nod* I too saw the Happy Story in 4 Words request - and wrote something suitably snide as is my usual response to being told to do something by someone I don't know. And sniggered at your response. Then the photo requests started and my immediate response was - walks, quacks and shits like a duck? Must be a duck...i.e. a scam of some kind involving information that people are not being given all the information about re use of etc etc. There is a distinct smell of con-job attached to it all. So I no longer post on his page (?) for that reason. And if it continues I will unlike and unfriend the whole bizzo. I don't like being used and that is what it feels like. I expect you will have another email from a bunch of lawyers soon David, coz that's what this whole thing smacks of - the Nazi-ish "how dare you question us!" status. You go get 'em - and you have all of YOUR supporters' backing to do it. Thanks for having the balls!!
This! I can't tell you how long ago I created an account and even made some picture contributions. I also want to know what the hell he's doing with all that content. What gives JGL!?
I was intrigued by the project and made an account on the site in 2013 (I would have been 17), but I don't think I ever quite "got it." I think I had wanted to submit something, but I can't remember for the life of me what it could have been. I was able to use "forgot password" to confirm that I did make an account, but there is absolutely nothing on the account. I wonder how much of the site is is creative teenagers trying to write r/NoSleep stories about...Easter Bunnies from Hell? Possibly the ultimate source for crappy pastas.
I was always perplexed that they/he very rarely promote anything they've completed.
My most charitable explanation for hitrecord is that it provides an outlet for people who otherwise wouldn't commit to creating art to be able to say "I made a thing!" Of course serious aspiring artists will run a mile when they see that they're handing over their intellectual property for peanuts (at best)... But I don't really think it's for them... and if it gets people in the artistic door, maybe that's a good thing?
I’m creeped out all the way JGL & company. Maybe a part of why this hits me the wrong way is the lack of sincerity HitRecord has in interacting with his fans. A big aimless unending project, smiling & waving “Hi, I’m JGL. How may I use you?” Can’t wait to hear the answers to your questions.
His posts come up on my feed it seems every time he posts one because my friends post their photos in the comments. It shits me. I was going to block him but then your comments popped up and made me laugh (obviously nothing's going on in my life!) wanted to see where it was going. I can block him now!
Think I read somewhere he made a book of peoples photos that sold a lot. Kind of genius, only people buying it surely would be the contributors wanting to see their photo...or do ' little book of calm' and random inspirational memes in print sell to older people? Probably!
But AI is much better. Though I want a villian angle using the sunset/forest/beach/things you love photos, being trapped in perpetual blandness for eternity.
I think he means well (maybe?) but the whole thing rubs me the wrong way too. Kind of like when random people slide into my DMs to ask if I will illustrate an entire children’s book idea they just came up with for free.
Thanks for this, like so many have seen JGL's tweets/FB, looked at the thousands of responses (wondered why people don't read and use his app), looked at the app but never gone there, and wondered about his motives.
I presume they must also be scraping the direct post responses? Otherwise the app must only see a fraction of those direct replies?
I wonder how many reply because he's generally thought of, and seems to be, a 'nice guy'. Imagine the response if, say, Donald Trump did the same?
So glad you are working on this! I started following him as a big fan too but immediately was like WTF is this?! I've really wanted to know so looking forward to see what they come back with

But seriously? Will he marry me?

Still spammy as fuck though.
