I for one can’t wait to get the vaccine! The amount of freedom it’ll bring, in the UK we’re almost 24 hours into a third national lockdown and looking at 100,000 deaths by February so the vaccine is the only way we’re getting out of this!

I also haven’t forgotten about emailing you that documentary link, I’ve been in hospital myself thankfully just with an asthma flare up so I’ve only just got round to texting my friend who directed it for the link because I can only find a shorter version 🤦🏼‍♀️

Ohhhh, boy am I ready for this. There is (or, at least, was) a Level 2 Biology Achievement Standard called 'Analyse the validity of biological information communicated to the public' that my department used to offer and we chose the topic of vaccines. In so doing, I found and read a lot of information and misinformation about vaccines, and couldn't help myself from starting to comment online to correct that misinfo (not the evidence-based best strategy for changing the minds of the OPs, but more for any watching). Been doing that ever since, so for at least 7 years. I'm so ready.

Also, note that measles is 99.8% survivable, but we vaccinate whole populations for that. Not all at once, sure, but that's only because the vaccine has been around for 40-odd years already.

And that claimed 99+% survivable rate for Covid-19 is in the context of the patients having access to modern medical care like 95 days in hospital. I'm wondering what it's like when you don't, but am a bit afraid to go looking. I'm sure there are some countries in the world that could provide that information though. Anyone heard how it's going in such areas? Haven't really heard a peep about them.

We saw what happens when you don't have/use that access and don't vaccinate against a 99.8% survivable disease in Samoa recently :/

No no, that guitar pedal in the vaccine isn't a Wah-Wah pedal, it's a Woo-Woo pedal.

Totally different sound. Badum-tish!

Interestingly, one of the original Wah-Wah pedals manufactured in 1970 was called the 'Cry Baby'.

I'll see myself out.

To be those paramedics deciding who gets treatment, rolling the dice and hoping they are making the right choice. Cannot imagine how they are feeling, how they will cope with the burden in the future. Devastating for them, their patients and families. We have undervalued healthcare workers for too long, I wish I could believe we will finally understand the terrible price they pay to heal us and give them a proper living wage. I don't have that much faith in governments or healthcare companies though.

I will be vaccinated as soon as one is available for me. Its the only way out of this shitshow.

I'm endlessly boggled by healthcare workers who are suspicious of vaccines. I do believe that a level of skepticism about everything is wise, but when it comes to vaccines, it's about the risks vs. benefits, and when you look at it that way, there's no question. And with these vaccines in particular, there is so much info available about their safety. I had a clinical instructor once who was anti-vaxx, and once she revealed that to us, it was pretty hard to respect her as a teacher. I'm glad this nurse you spoke to ultimately did the research she felt was necessary and did the right thing by getting the vaccine when it was offered. I did some research, too, when I had questions about the R&D timeline. There is no shortage of info about the corona vaccines available to the public, as exhibited by the very existence of these interviews, so I hope skeptics everywhere hold themselves accountable for getting informed.

The only thing I'm looking forward to is getting vaccinated. Here in the States, apparently we have to worry about the pharmacists who are administering the vaccine because one in Wisconsin just got arrested for leaving a bunch of vials of vaccine out of the refrigerator so that they would become useless and then give them out to people because he believes that the vaccine is dangerous. He's also a doomsday prepper and a conspiracy believer.

There was some real harrowing bits in the first interview, but for some reason I think the bit that stuck me the most was the nurse’s fear of being seen in public in her uniform, appreciated for being an essential worker but ~associated~ with Covid. That never occurred to me. I was living in a fantasy world in my head where people were letting medical staff deservingly go ahead in grocery store lines and clapping for them as they left for the morning, but sadly it makes sense that they felt ostracised, too.

P.S Comorbidity wasn’t a term I was familiar with! I love learning new words on here. Webworm forever.

Bring on the vax and yay for Dr Souxsie! Matt King is a total twat, obviously. And thank you! I want a giant cat so bad now. Happy New Year to you!

Jono's been at it for a while - I apologise on behalf of Westies for our wayward brother.

I also apologise on behalf of the good people of Okaihau for Matt King.

Matt's dad's name is Joe and their family farm was in a valley, north of Okaihau. So all through our time growing up, whenever anyone said "You must be joking!?", we would respond, "No, he lives down the Valley" 😂😂. Ultimate in Northland dad jokes.

That "Koch's postulates" bullshit about the COVID virus not having been isolated and "not existing" was all the rage during AIDS denialism about HIV.

https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn17326-five-myths-about-hiv-and-aids/

That was rabidly pushed by AIDS conspiracist Peter Duesberg with devastating consequences for AIDS in Africa. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIV/AIDS_in_Africa

https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20227131-500-aids-denial-a-lethal-delusion/

There were unscrupulous megavitamin sellers making profits off it all back then too - just like Alex Jones does now.

Seth Kalichman's book 'Denying AIDS: Conspiracy Theories, Pseudoscience and Human Tragedy' reads like a blueprint for COVID denialism.

Thank god (although I'm an atheist :-)) for Dr Wiles. I just hope the majority of people listen to her rather than idiots like Matt King.

I agree re the spelling. I find it really hard to take people who can't spell seriously.

Also I want to know more about this giant cat! Is he/she a normal breed or that big cat breed? How much does he/she weigh?.....
