Love this opportunity to chat with fellow Webworms! But it’s also super dangerous as an epic time suck 😜 Look after yourself in that heat, it’s no joke - at 35C (or 31C with 100% humidity) wet bulb temperature you literally start cooking your organs: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-hot-is-too-hot-for-the-human-body1/
Jackson and I live about 1k from each other and regularly take too long to recognise each other at the supermarket (despite not being face blind). Def on the eating together bandwagon.
I don't know how you managed temps in the 100s with no a/c. I was without it for a week while mine broke down this summer and it didn't even get up to 100...I bought a portable a/c unit just to keep from getting homicidal (I do NOT tolerate heat well!).
Also, just because I haven't said it for a while - if you make a typo in your comment here, you'll find the Edit function hidden under the three dots beneath your post ...
Wait—Did you say you have no A/C?! How are you surviving? Get an air conditioner to stick in your bedroom window. If you don’t want to spend $150, ask around. It’s easier to score a free one than you’d think! (There are currently six in my basement, abandoned by previous tenants.)When people move to a place with central a/c they don’t want their old window units any more so they get left behind, given away etc.
The heat in LA the past couple weeks has been absolutely brutal. I am also without A/C, so I had 3 fans and 2 air purifiers going and I was still a walking sweat puddle. And I’m slightly fortunate as it was “only” 100 where I was. It was 108 up in Santa Clarita where my sister lives. Though she does have A/C so who’s to say who the fortunate one is.
I love this particular newsletter, and I hope I’m not jumping the gun here- but I feel like if there is ANY online community that would be safe to join chats without trolls it would be Webworm. Have been unbelievably busy over the last 6ish weeks and have dearly missed my Webworm reads and comment sections, but I’ll be working my way through catching up now and I’m so excited 😆 it’s like when you wait to watch a series until every episode is out!
Tech question - Has anyone discovered a way of muting notifications for the substack chat but not for newsletters? I'm struggling with overwhelm with all the various chats that are getting set up.
PS - will try and sneak some Webworm merch into the suitcase to bring to Australia for these Tickled screenings in Nov/Dec!
Yes please. I'll definitely grab some merch in Melbourne!
Yay! See you there (Dec 6 - pencil it in)
Done!

No, air conditioning! I would never sleep again and be so cranky! I could not survive. Be careful!
I’ve been looking to book a sneaky trip to Sydney from Brisbane to see Hamilton (again) so this could be an awesome 2-for-1 if I can swing it
Let's eat a food in close physical proximity together when you're in Melbs.
Done.

Oh, perfect! Drinks on me.

The links to chat are reversed i.e. " you can join in using your browser" = https://open.substack.com/pub/webworm/chat leads to the app download, while " get the App and join in there " = https://substack.com/chat/39081 leads to the web browser chat.

Oh, gosh, sorry! This is very confusing. Hopefully people find their way to the correct spot...

I have a small portable unit in the bedroom - so seal myself in that small room. The rest of the house is the wild (hot) west!
Ok good—glad to hear it. We can’t have you melting!

Oh, this is annoying!
Here you go - worked for me: https://support.substack.com/hc/en-us/articles/10566355427860-How-can-I-mute-or-leave-a-Chat
Thank you!
