Hi - it's Tuesday morning, I still feel in a kind of shock over all this.

Thanks for the outpouring of comments here. I read through, and I feel a lot more sane - but also incredibly sad that we all have to deal with this in the first place.

This year is going to be - unusual. In America, and also far beyond as other countries (including New Zealand) embrace this MAGA anti-woke "free speech" stance on things.

For those with values, for those who care, for those that aren't insane entitled assholes: it's going to be a really fucking testing time.

Thanks for being here.

I actually had the thought that perhaps we should keep quiet about you so you don't get deported. Do you know if you're on anybody's radar that is related to the US government? (And yes, I know the obvious thing to say here is, but David is white! I'm not sure if that matters anymore or not.)

Expand full comment

You summed it up perfectly. Are you a giant entitled piece of shit bully? No? Well your going to have a distressing time.

Expand full comment

Terrified for trans people

Expand full comment

It's a really bleak, bleak time for minorities. As if trans folk didn't already have enough to deal with in society, we have this giant backwards step in the US. Horrific.

💯 my heart is breaking for them. And we all know he’s coming for LGBTQI, women and others after…

About to be exclusively the land of the rich white cishet male, if there was ever a time that it wasn't.

Expand full comment

Now they can just say it out loud and its totally fine. Distressing af.

Expand full comment

It is completely mask off now. It is vile and terrifying.

Expand full comment

This is what I thought when I saw that. It sets a terrifying trend in other parts of the world too. We are heading down that path with an election this year in Australia.

Expand full comment

We are terrified too, even those of us not in the USA. This shit has emboldened the worst of humanity to show their true colours and receive praise the more horrible they are.

How about caitlyn Jenner she’s a big trump fan so money might make some ok🙈

Trying to tune it all out. Which feels irresponsible, but I've already spent enough mental energy on that man. I consider myself fairly cynical, but I'm a bit dumbfounded at the speed at which the tech and media classes are bending to kiss the ring.

Last time I was worried about all the damage he could do. Maybe if he does enough damage this time, people will finally learn their lesson. Awful to think, I know, but I can't think of any other way for people to get it through their thick skulls.

Elon just did a full on Nazi salute, BTW. (Not a joke.)

Expand full comment

Seeing Bezos and Zuckerberg there, cozying up - what a disgusting, greedy four years this is gonna be. I get the idea of tuning out - I will at times. But I also wanna be here (along with some guest writers) to report on some of this stuff to hopefully keep readers here a bit abreast in a way that isn't too bleak. I dunno, sharing text messages seemed like a way to cover this that could also offer a few gags in there. Because we gotta laugh a little, right?

You have a tough job. Thank you for what you are doing.

My Mom got a cancer diagnosis a few weeks ago and all I can think is not only if her care for chemo will be in jeopardy but also that simple things like gynecological care over the next year will be harder for her living in a red state.

Please, those who are willing, delete all meta apps off your phone. You don’t have to delete your accounts, just the apps.

And if you were a TikTok person feel free to join r/nothinghappeninghere on reddit. It started before the tiktok ban & is a gathering place for tiktok people in and outside the U.S. to stay connected.

Now’s legitimately the time to delete all social media and to start using small corners of the internet like it’s 1999. Keep the lines of communication open and information flowing. And do. not. on any level. support. meta.

Just checked you were comp'd - and you are. No readers here dealing with parents with cancer should be paying for Webworm - put that $ into fuckin' treats. Healthcare. Anything but here! Thinking of you.

You’re really kind, David. Thank you

I am so sorry. I hope those "cheaper" eggs were worth all this. I am on the menopause subreddit and people are sharing resources on where to acquire things like HRT because it could become extremely hard to access.

I agree about social media. Finding pockets of community and building community is the only way we can get through.

Thinking of you and your mum x

It’s really so disheartening. I feel for those on the menopause subreddit. So much basic care lost is really distressing. Our care is already so poor in many ways in the U.S. It’s scary. Your message is a bright spot though :) thanks for your kind words and warm thoughts.

I’m glad for this community, at least! and prefer small corners of the internet where things are calm and sane and peaceful, anyway. A break from the meta algorithmic doom scrolling will do my brain good. It’s a shame it’s all come to a head like this. Hope you’re keeping safe and sane where you are xx

I’m still shocked Snoop performed for Trump over the weekend. I’m trying to process this still.

Expand full comment

I feel like he's been selling out for awhile, right? Still sucks. I remember seeing him in concert in NZ about years ago - actually a pretty terrible show, but more the venues fault than Snoop's!

Expand full comment

Apparently so. I just didn’t think he would cross over to Trumps side. He called him a racist a few times.

I’ve heard he wasn’t good love to be honest. A lot of rappers seem to not be good live. I enjoyed Busta Rhymes and Action Bronson live, but more for stage presence than performance.

That's the only that really hurt so far.

Expand full comment

No one loves money more than snoop… except maybe martha. They’ve been such a dynamic duo bc the two of them follow the money wherever it flows, doesn’t matter the source.

I’m more scared at the implications—that Snoop didn’t see this affecting his bottom line in the future. We’ve been on such a pendulum swing towards the left. The fact Snoop’s following the money to the right to back Trump imo has very scary implications. It does not bode well for the future landscape of the country

Discombobulated. That’s how I feel too. You’ve summed it up perfectly. Discombobulated.

Thinking back to this day four years ago. I remember thinking “thank God, he’s gone. He’s never getting anywhere near the White House again. He can’t. He’ll go to prison for everything he’s done. Thank God the sane people are back in charge.” And now… he’s back.

It wasn’t supposed to be this way. Things shouldn’t have turned out like this. We were supposed to have moved as a world, as a species. Biden was supposed to usher in a new era of progressive politics. Statehood for Puerto Rico, legalising marijuana, forgiving student debt. Instead what did we get? A horrifically botched withdrawal from Afghanistan and a probable genocide in Gaza. Christ, no wonder Trump won. And America, and probably the rest of the world, is going to pay. How awful. I feel for everyone in America who didn’t want this.

Expand full comment

Biden was the wrong choice in 2020 and Tim Waltz or Bernie Sanders would have been better and would have had another go at it in 2024. Biden was too conservative and now everyone will pay the price.

Usually I like the idea of travelling back in time (where I am younger!)

But this trip back in time is not so great.

I took the dog for a walk and met the jolly fellow dog walker I say hello to most mornings and, while the beasts sniffed butts, she said, ‘how are you’ and I said, ‘well I woke up to Trump’s campaign speech thanks to my radio alarm’. And a look of beatific madness suffused her face as she pitched into how wonderful it all is and how we mustn’t listen to all the years of ‘indoctrination’ that he’s bad and how good it will be when he takes back the canal so “it isn’t controlled by the Chinese any more”. So now the world is screwed and I need to plan a new morning dog walk route.

Am I overreacting, or are there some disturbing little parallels with Luxon and our present government?

Absolutely not overreacting. All this MAGA stuff is infesting New Zealand and it's leadership, and it's horrible to see.

not overreacting. Our govt has learnt some tricks from american right politicians. They are in the process of legislating to plunder the earth and installing extreme libertarian individualism as our principles to live by and regulate by. Not sure what has held them back from openly targeting trans people but I am sure they would like to.

I feel the same here in Aus. We have an opposition leader that froths over this and have already started seeing the same language around migrants, minorities, climate change etc not to mention our leader is besties with a vile, zionist, coal billionaire who surprise surprise supports Trump.

I feel like I've entered an alternate dimension.

One of my cats died suddenly the other night. Second one to go in less than six months. She was old and it was likely a cardiac event or blood cot. It was so awful and I've never felt more helpless.

I've been out of sorts since then and a broader sense of helplessness is taking root. I can't quite believe that many things are happening. And I don't know what to do or think.

How worried should I be?

How much of this is bravado versus real threat?

The TikTok stunt, however poorly executed to some, was probably effective for a majority of Americans because dear gods we are an ignorant lot. (The Huntington Beach cashiers from last week's FB not knowing about the fires is currently an intrusive thought.)

The US federal government is complex and significant change is usually slow, but I have little faith in the current checks and balances. Presidential powers have bloated over a long period of time.

Am I living in the last days of an empire? Because that's the vibe, and my usual cynical optimism is losing the latter.

Expand full comment

His hires this time are even more unqualified than the ones before. I can't think of another group I would prefer to be responsible for institutionalizing fascism. My skin is literally crawling. Looking at Trump surrounded by all these weird billionaire losers makes it abundantly clear how little Trump cares about the working class and how dangerous he will be this term compared to last... there seems to be a large shift this time towards personalist politics which is scary. I'm so tired of feeling like all republicans care about is short term profits (ignoring the massive costs that will incur through climate disasters..), racism and restricting peoples freedom of expression. I'd like to believe that since over HALF of voters chose him that this isn't all republicans care about I'm grasping at straws trying to find common ground with those voters. Where are the executive orders that actually will help people? How can someone be so selfish? Sitting here with lots of questions and sadness today.

Expand full comment

Don't let anyone tell you Trump is the first serial rapist to become president. Most of American history is very white washed. Many of the founding fathers committed atrocities that should have had them in prison for life.

I'm feeling upset, and ready for a fight. A fight for the planet, a fight for the health and well being of my fellow citizens.

If you're a targeted minority under a fascist regime and you want to avoid dying, you need to leave the country at least 3 years before the violence starts. We are, as the kids say, big fucked.

I feel...like crying, to be honest. I wish America's actions didn't have such an impact on the rest of the world. I feel that Trumpism is the reason NZ ended up with the worst, greediest, most heartless and soulless government in our history. I feel like the greedy tech bros are to blame for the destruction of the planet and human rights and we are powerless to stop them. Yes, they are insanely wealthy, but there are plenty of people on the left with money too. I feel angry that they're doing absolutely nothing and therefore fuelling the fire. I am genuinely terrified of World War III. Right now this all still feels kind of surreal but soon the entire world will start feeling the consequences in the form of extreme violence. I am most afraid for women, the LGBTQI+ community and POC.

I feel heartbroken and devastated over Snoop. He was a hero to billions of people. We all thought he was a real one. It is akin to JK Rowling coming out as a TERF. I am scared that slowly all our heroes will turn to the dark side. I'm scared that the majority of people will once they're in survival mode. And we're all going to be in survival mode soon. Well, not straight white males, probably. Y'all will be fine.

Most of all, I'm really pissed that I'm alive for all this. Haven't us Millennials been through enough? I thought I'd be long dead before the end of the world. I fucking hate this.

Arguably, we have it worse and always will. The majority of us will never own houses, unlike Gen X. Many of us had our careers and finances derailed by the pandemic and are still recovering. We struggle to get into management/higher level positions because so many Boomers refuse to retire. We came of age in the late '90s/early 2000s when body-shaming, eating disorders, homophobia and sexism were at a real peak, not to mention the emergence of the internet into the mainstream, and all the bullshit that came with that. We will feel the effects of what happens now politically because so many of us do not have assets or financial stability. Everyone in power now is a Boomer or Gen X and they don't give a fuck about us. I could go on and on and on. It's not a competition, but fuck were we served up a huge steaming plate of shit to deal with.
