Hi,
It’s been awhile since we’ve done an AMA on Webworm — so let’s do it.
Over the next 48 hours, I’ll be milling around in the comments answering any questions you might have.
I genuinely look forward to these things as I love the Webworm community so much — and it’s a way to say “thanks” to those who pay for my work.
As per usual, I’m happy to answer questions about whatever — Webworm stuff (there’s been a big update on the Chris Luxon “nipple” painting), or maybe you have a question about my documentary work or Flightless Bird.
We actually just released the latest Flightless Bird episode today — it’s about death row:
This episode was developed from the Webworm story I wrote a few weeks ago — and it was Webworm subscribers that allowed me to tell it.
Literally.
It cost $2191.62 to tell the Marcellus Williams story:
That came from you — and it let me get a flight, book a rental, get accommodation, gas and food — plus pastries and coffee to take in to the activist’s HQ.
I called Rob at Flightless Bird to make sure I had time to go — and said I could get that Webworm story into a podcast a few weeks later.
So — THANK YOU.
Webworm readers — you — allowed me to do this.
I don’t know if I explain enough how the subscriber base on Webworm helps me tell stories? Just in a very practical way — flights, coffee — journalism needs support, and I have paying Webworm members to thank for that.
Thank you.
My Australian Dates
I’m coming to Australia at the end of November, and I’ll be screening my 2016 documentary Tickled in Sydney and Melbourne.
I’ll be doing a Q&A afterwards, and will have some Webworm merch with me (including some brand new designs thanks to my collaborator Jess Johnson).
This is a ticketed event!
If you’re a paying Webworm member, I’ve put free tickets aside just for you — and you can RSVP here.
UPDATE! These free tickets have now all been taken by other Webworm readers! But please check the Eventbrite event pages closer to the event, as people will drop out as they change plans.
There is also the option to purchase tickets (while they last) - this is to help cover costs:
1. Sydney: Tickled at the Orpheum: 7pm, November 27
Tickets are available for purchase here, from the Orpheum website.
2. Melbourne: Tickled at the Nova: 7pm, December 6
Tickets are available for purchase here, from the Nova website.
Again, come say hello beforehand, and stay for the Q&A!
I will probably also record some Australian Flightless Bird episodes while in town, and I am open to any suggestions you might have.
Melbourne’s Carrot Man? Rhonda and Ketut? Pesto the giant baby penguin? Kath & Kim? Bin birds? A look into that mushroom poisoning? Let me know! davidfarrier@protonmail.com, or in the comments section.
Spaceman Barry Update
A few quick updates from Noah about the Spaceman Barry podcast:
“Barry drove a white Oldsmobile Cutlass Sierra prob like a 1992. It wouldn’t pass smog check because of a bad gas odor.
He had me check it out, I told him, “It’s not the tank and it’s definitely coming from under the hood!”
I didn’t really have time to address it — so the next day he soaks a rag in gas, puts it under the hood, and drives to a different place to get a smog check… and they pass it after finding the smelly rag.”
I guess the lesson is — he wasn’t exactly trustworthy. Oh, and this is Barry’s cat Shadow (not the one who got cremated, that was Miss Kitty) — “living a much better life now.”
Alright. Australia suggestions — and your AMA questions — down below:
Let’s go!
David.
Hey David, love your work so much as a New Zealander losing faith in our government and media. What do you think of a reverse flightless bird episode about the treaty of Waitangi? Big topic, I know. I think Americans would find it fascinating to learn about our founding document and what they are currently trying to do to undermine it's legacy
Australia episode suggestion: drop bears!
